The Uganda Insurers Association (UIA) in partnership with the Uganda Police Force have held an engagement aimed at discussing and enforcing the Motor Third Party Insurance (MTP) in the Western Uganda.
The meeting that was attended by Western Region traffic Police officers also sought to refresh the police officers’ understanding of MTP and other motor policies that they are mandated by law to enforce. The meeting took place at Acacia Hotel in Mbarara.
During the engagement, UIA Chief Executive Officer Jonan Kisakye explained that MTP is mandatory and plays a crucial role in protecting individuals who may suffer losses, injuries or fatalities resulting from road accidents.
He added that contrary to the public misconception that insurers are the sole beneficiaries of MTP premiums, MTP prevents motorists from bearing the full financial burden of road accidents.
“I would like to ask the men in uniform mandated with enforcing the MTP to ensure they educate our motorists on the importance of MTP. We also want to encourage the motorists to engage the insurance companies in case there are any concerns they want addressed. This is the primary reason they exist,” Kisakye noted.
He added that through the regulator the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA), UIA is currently collaborating with the government to amend the existing MTP legislation to align with the current economic realities.
He also revealed that insurers now offer superior coverage options for MTP with supplementary benefits at just a minimal additional fee.
Speaking on behalf of the Police, Superintendent of Police Betubiza Fabian, the Regional Traffic Officer of Kigezi, expressed gratitude to UIA for enlightening the police officers on MTP and pledged to work closely with UIA to enforce the law while educating the public.
UIA’s Non-Life Technical Assistant Gilbert Emojong detailed the various insurance industry bodies & players and the roles they play for instance the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA), Uganda Insurers Association (UIA), Insurance Training College (ITC), Insurance Brokers Association of Uganda (IBAU), insurers (Life, Non-Life & Micro) & reinsurers among others.
