Uganda Insurers Association organized a workshop to discuss the state of Motor Third Party (MTP) Insurance in Northern Uganda with the Northern Region Traffic Police Force. The engagement that took place on 23rd May, 2024 at Boma Hotel in Gulu focused on MTP compliance by motorists & its enforcement by the traffic police in the region. Participants included traffic police officers, insurance providers & other stakeholders. Notably, Regional Head of Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) for Northern Uganda - Cynthia Ayero graced the workshop.
Non-life Technical Assistant- Gilbert Emojong who led the UIA Team provided an update on UIA’s membership and its on-going efforts to increase public awareness on MTP & Insurance in general. He highlighted UIA’s commitment to demystifying insurance to the public. While emphasizing the importance of Motor Third Party Insurance, Gilbert assured the participants that UIA will continue its sensitization efforts across all regions of the country in a bid to enhance the understanding of Motor Third Party Insurance & compliance among motorists. In his presentation, he also mentioned that UIA works hand in hand with its members and other key insurance industry bodies such as the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) & the Insurance Training College (ITC).
Regional Traffic Officer for West Nile - Superintendent Sam Chekwel lauded UIA’s efforts of educating Traffic Officers and called upon all participants to share the knowledge acquired with their colleagues and the wider Northern Uganda community. IRA’s Cynthia Ayero underscored the critical role of MTP Insurance in safeguarding motorists and victims of road accidents further emphasizing that it is a mandatory requirement for all motorists. Cynthia called upon all participants to collaborate in developing effective solutions to boost MTP adoption among motorists in Northern Uganda.
In related engagements, Regional Traffic Officer for Aswa West - Caroline Angeyo, Head of Traffic Police for Greater Gulu - Assistant Superintendent of Police Lachen Otika Patrick, IRA’s Cynthia Ayero and Swaibu Lubega (Inspection Officer) joined Gilbert Emojong in Motor Third Party Insurance sensitization talk shows on Mega FM & Radio Pacis.
The UIA Team comprising Gilbert Emojong & Research Officer - Angella Kemigisa also visited the different Motor Third Party Insurance Agents in Gulu City and discussed the status of uptake of MTP in Northern Uganda, challenges faced & possible solutions that can be adopted to boost compliance.
