UCMP & UIA meet on ICOGU & Oil & Gas Sector matters

Representatives from the Uganda Chamber of Mines & Petroleum (UCMP) visited the UIA Offices in Kololo. The purpose of the visit was to update the Association on the Chamber’s 2024 undertakings and exchange ideas on how to synergise with UIA better. CEO - Humphrey Asiimwe who led the UCMP Team was joined by Co-ordinator, Junior Chamber - Ronnia Tukamuhebwa, Projects & Research Development Officer - Kenneth Asiimwe Joevanne & Head of Operations - Daphine Nimusiima. The UIA Team comprised Chairman - Latimer Mukasa, Vice Chairman – Paul Muwanga, CEO – Jonan Kisakye, CEO Uganda Re – Ronald Musoke & Market Development Manager - Annet Katusiime.

Mr. Latimer Mukasa who led the UIA Team pointed out that UIA is a member of the UCMP courtesy of the Insurance Consortium on Oil & Gas Uganda (ICOGU) which covers risks for Tilenga, KingFisher & EACOP projects. He thanked UCMP for taking part in the recent Oil & Gas Symposium and opened the door for more collaborations in the future. He acknowledged that while activity is on-going for Oil & Gas through ICOGU, a lot still needs to be done on the mineral side. CEO of Uganda Re - Ronald Musoke expressed optimism for the future of ICOGU noting that its participation in the Oil & Gas sector is set to expand as its capacity grows.

UCMP CEO - Humphrey Asiimwe said that their visit to UIA was premised on three grounds: to seek feedback on how UCMP can serve & synergise with UIA better, share UCMP’s plans with UIA and to invite UIA & ICOGU to the upcoming 9th Annual Oil & Gas Convention slated to take place from 17th to 18th April 2024 at Kampala Serena Hotel. Humphrey lauded UIA & its membership for the support it renders to the Oil & gas sector through ICOGU whose success has served as a benchmark for other sectors looking to participate in the Oil & Gas sector. He further commended ICOGU & UIA for investing in capacity building to understand & serve Uganda’s Oil & Gas Sector referencing the Oil & Gas Symposium while calling for similar efforts to boost the insurance brokers’ capacity. He also urged UIA to work towards ensuring the Oil & Gas sector players adhere to Marine Cargo Insurance directive.

UIA CEO – Jonan Kisakye raised the issue of the increasing momentum against Oil & Gas sector activities and solicited UCMP’s support in telling a positive story of ICOGU’s involvement and the benefits of the Oil & Gas sector in general. He informed the UCMP Team that UIA & ICOGU are working with Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC) & the Petroleum Authority of Uganda (PAU) regarding the enforcement of Marine Cargo directive in the Oil & Gas sector and asked for UCMP support on the same. He also promised that the Association would look into ways of supporting the brokers in enhancing their capacity in the Oil & Gas sector space.

Mr. Asiimwe pledged UCMP’s support in telling a positive story of the Oil & Gas sector activities through the media & other avenues and advised UIA & ICOGU members to also highlight what they are doing for the communities in the Albertine area to facilitate a community buy-in.
