Oil & Gas Symposium to enhance Technical Capacity of Insurance Players in the Oil & Gas Sector

We held a Press Conference at our offices to launch the Oil & Gas Symposium slated to take place from 20th – 22nd February at Four Points By Sheraton Hotel. The 3-day symposium seeks to update the ICOGU members on the latest developments in the Oil & Gas sector and address key areas of concern to enable them make informed decisions as they participate in the consortium insurance plans. 

Speaking to the press, UIA CEO & ICOGU (Insurance Consortium for Oil & Gas Uganda) Technical Committee Secretary, Jonan Kisakye noted that the symposium seeks to enhance the capacity of the Consortium and its members. Latimer Mukasa, the Chairman UIA & CEO MUA Insurance, thanked the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA), Petroleum Authority of Uganda (PAU), Total Energies, CNOOC Uganda, Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC) for their valuable contribution to ICOGU. He added that he is looking forward to attaining more insight & meaningful progress from the ICOGU Oil & Gas Symposium.

ICOGU Technical Committee Chairperson & CEO of Jubilee Allianz, Paul Kavuma said that the symposium is meant to enhance the knowledge & technical skills of the ICOGU members. He also described ICOGU as a “smart move” that was taken by the Non-Life Insurers who came together to pool capacity and form a consortium to offer insurance cover for the Oil & Gas sector.

The symposium will leave no stone unturned as the discussions shall span a wide range of areas regarding the consortium. Being the first of its kind in the insurance industry, a number of areas require fine-tuning basing not just on the current state of Uganda’s Oil & Gas sector, but also developments from other evolved markets that we seek to learn from & benchmark on. Some of the major areas of discussion will include: Underwriting oil and gas risks, Contractors All Risks, Reinsurance for oil and gas risks, Claims and Loss Adjusting, Liabilities & Business Interruption.

The Consortium Leader of ICOGU, UAP Old Mutual was represented by their General Manager: James Maguru at the press launch while Uganda Reinsurance Company, the ICOGU Fund Manager, was represented by the CEO Ronald Musoke. They both expounded on their respective roles in ICOGU. Symposium Guest Speaker Denzel Mensah, a Chartered Insurance Broker from Price Forbes was also in attendance.

Key participants in the Oil & Gas symposium will include: Senior Management, Technical & Underwriting staff of ICOGU, representatives from the Petroleum Authority of Uganda, the Insurance Regulatory Authority of Uganda, the Uganda Association of Engineering Valuers & Loss Assessors & representatives from the regional Oil & Gas market.

The Oil & Gas Symposium is organized by ICOGU & UIA in partnership with the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA), Petroleum Authority of Uganda (PAU), Total Energies & Marsh Uganda.
