Northern Region Consultation Workshop on the Draft Guidelines for Worker’s Compensation

On 28th November, 2023, we camped at Acholi Inn Hotel in Gulu to engage the Northern Region Labour Officers on Worker’s Compensation. This was in partnership with the Ministry of Gender, Labour & Social Development.

At the workshop, the Labour Support Officer of the Ministry of Gender, Labour & Social Development - Ms. Martha Irankunda presented the computation & guidelines of worker’s compensation.

Onzoma Apollo, the Assistant Commissioner, Labor Relations, Department of Labor, Industrial Relations & Productivity lauded the efforts of the Labour Officers and for remaining steadfast amidst the scarcity of resources. The Lira District Senior Labour Officer - Mr. Oguta Tom noted that the workshop has equipped the Labour Officers with knowledge on how to handle labour issues. He promised that the issues raised will be addressed.

The workshop was moderated by UIA Manager, Non-Life – Mrs. Juliet Igonu who commended the efforts of the Ministry of Gender, Labour & Social Development for taking proactive steps towards developing the Worker’s Compensation guidelines.

She noted that one of the remarkable benefits of the guidelines is their facilitation of a streamlined compensation process for insurance companies.

Juliet reasoned that by providing a clear and comprehensive framework, the guidelines contribute to the ease of processing compensation claims and helps insurance companies in their assessment, ensures efficient & timely disbursement of compensation to workers. She added that the guidelines serve as a valuable reference point, reducing ambiguity and potential disputes in the compensation process.
