The first Life Managers’ Forum for 2023 was held on 27th September in the UIA Gardens. It featured a Guest Speaker from Africa Re Nairobi offices - Dr. Moses Koinange who is in charge of Life and Medical Underwriting. He gave an industry perspective on our levels of Underwriting particularly on the Credit Life business.
Mr. Badru Bengo, the Manager Life, Medical & Pensions, represented the CEO - Jonan Kisakye who was away on official duties. Badru delivered the CEO’s submission on some of the Association’s major achievements including: the Localization of the Marine Insurance through a notice by URA & IRA whose implementation is set for 1st October, 2023, the actualization of the Oil & Gas Underwriting and Placements through ICOGU, increased member involvement & engagement in the activities of the Association, more visibility for the Association & its activities to mention but a few. He also informed the Forum that we now have a fully-fledged Research Desk which carries out pivotal industry information collection & dissemination for members through research & reports.
Badru also further highlighted the new strategic objectives of UIA which are based on key interventions, and the proposed business drivers to achieve market growth through: increased understanding & appreciation of insurance by existing and prospective customers, leveraging technology to deliver insurance services, building institutional capacity through research & more.
Our Market Development Manager – Ms. Annet Katusiime informed the forum about the new initiatives that her desk is coming up with, which also entail engaging the different key industry players, customers & potential customers for feedback on what they expect. On the side of Research, a number of surveys that have been carried out were also highlighted including: the Traders’ Survey with the support of Kampala City Traders Association (KACITA), Mbarara City Traders Association & Mbale City Traders Association to understand the needs & insurance coverage amongst the member traders with the report set to be shared in October 2023.
Annet also explained that a survey to understand the expectations of our members will form the basis of our 2024 Work Plan while the one on Consumption will inform the Insurance Literacy Agenda which is also set to be rolled out in 2024.
The Managers’ Forum deliberated on some of the key pertinent industry concerns ranging from issues of Group Credit and Life rating and Underwriting, status of mortality data collection, the criteria for the Life Agent Awards in the categories of Group Life, Group Credit and Provident Funds, the Life Managers’ training needs for the proposed Africa Re Training as well as the proposal for the industry Know Your Customer Document.

The Life Managers’ Forum is purposed to create a platform for Life Insurance Managers, Executives, and Industry Experts to:
- Share knowledge & insights about the evolving life insurance landscape.
- Discuss emerging trends, challenges & opportunities.
- Foster collaboration and partnerships within the insurance industry most especially between Life Insurers and Reinsurance companies.
- Enhance professional development through innovation, sharing experience & networking opportunities.
