The Uganda Insurers Association uses art in high schools to educate on insurance

On the 21st of June 2019, the UIA launched the inaugural national high school essay and drawing/painting competition at the Secretariat in Kololo. The National Essay and Drawing/Painting competition was developed as a platform to educate and interest this segment not only in terms of consumption of this service but as a possible future career path for them.

By using arts, the competition appealed to both their playful as well as creative sides as they expressed this either through essays or through drawing/painting.  The result was pieces that are informative of their understanding of insurance services as well as indicative as to what we need to address in order to close knowledge gaps.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Paul Kavuma, Chief Executive Officer of UIA, said, “We are pleased that we had the turn up that we did and expect that as an annual event, we will only continue to attract more participants. In addition to enabling these students to learn and change their perceptions about insurance, we are also looking to grow these students into ambassadors for the insurance industry. They will become our very active emissaries in their schools, in their homes and in the community at large and help spread information about insurance to those that they come into contact with. This will certainly go a long way in ensuring that we increase penetration but also that the benefit of insurance will be appreciated by more people- and particularly by this future consumption segment.”

The competition was structured to allow for competition at regional level (Central, East, North and Western) and then the National Winner was picked from the Regional winners. The competition attracted over 100 participants from across the country.
